The Webley Mark II .455 Revolver was adopted by the British military in 1894 as an improvement on the original Mark I. Key differences included the use of smokeless powder (cordite) in a shorter case, a redesigned grip frame, and a sturdier trigger guard, which was an upgrade from the earlier version. It was a large-caliber revolver that saw widespread use in conflicts like the Boer War and World War I, and its .455 Webley cartridge was designed for significant stopping power, although later versions of the ammunition had various projectile changes.

Key features and history

  • Adoption: Adopted by British forces in 1894 as an upgrade to the Mark I.
  • Powder and cartridge: Switched from black powder to smokeless cordite powder, which burned more efficiently in a shorter case than the original.
  • Projectile: Propelled a 265-grain lead round-nosed bullet at approximately 700 feet per second.
  • Changes from Mark I: Included a recontoured grip frame, a sturdier trigger guard, and a modified hammer spur.
  • Service: Remained a primary sidearm for the British military into the 1960s, seeing extensive use in the Boer War and World War I.
  • Ammunition variations: The .455 Webley cartridge evolved over time, with different versions containing different projectile compositions, such as hollow points in the Mark III.
  • Decline: Its military use declined due to the increasing relevance of semi-automatic pistols, particularly in 9mm, although the high cost of .455 Webley ammunition also played a role.
